'Self'

The identification with an individual consciousness formed from multiple aggregates of conditioned processes (physical body, sensations, emotions, thoughts, personality, etc.).
Synonyms: identity, ego, individual consciousness, “I”, "me".

Grip of the 'self'

Moments when we are controlled by the “self.”
Examples: a surge of aversion (anger, hatred, or jealousy), or a phase of craving (for food, sex, money, etc.).

Grip of the mind

Moments when we are controlled by the mind.
Examples: periods of daydreaming during which we are carried away by the stream of our thoughts, phases of anxiety that cloud our perception, or fear that causes our thoughts to loop endlessly.

Afflictions

States of mind that negatively affect us (anger, jealousy, sadness, disgust, pride, malice, etc.).

Distraction

Attachment to everything that stimulates the “self” and gives it a sense of relative existence (social life, the arts, culture, emotions, media, games, sports, etc.).

Awareness

A stable, clear, and calm presence that appears when the stream of thoughts temporarily comes to a halt and there is no longer a “self” attempting to observe.
Synonym: true nature.

Awakening

The process of disengaging from the “self,” which allows one to see the world as it truly is through Awareness and brings an end to afflictions.

Conditioned flow

The uninterrupted stream of causes and effects that has continued since the Big Bang.
Synonyms: continuum, karma.

Persistent illusion

The process that leads us to firmly believe that a continuum is stable, even though it is constantly changing.
Example: believing that matter is solid.
