⭐ Exercise 1: Giving and Receiving
I invite you to explore a powerful exercise, directly inspired by the practice of Tonglen, rooted in Mahāyāna Buddhism.
Very often, we do not know what to do with another person’s suffering. And so, when we are faced with someone who is in pain, the most common response is discomfort—or avoidance.
This exercise invites us to approach such situations in a completely counterintuitive way.
It consists of engaging in a particular kind of breathing: inhaling the suffering of others, and exhaling our true nature, with all its qualities—calm, confidence, stability, clarity, compassion, and more.
Through this invisible breath, we offer the person in distress an opportunity to recognize their true nature, much like a form of darshan.
Of course, practicing Tonglen is not accessible to everyone. It requires being firmly rooted in one’s true nature, and the ability to see others through the eyes of Awareness.
It takes practice, but the results can be miraculous.
I share my feelings in the Facebook group The Path to Awakening to help others.
