Back THE PATH TO AWAKENING ⭐ Exercise 2: The Silent Little "Self"

⭐ Exercise 2: The Silent Little "Self"

The "self" loves to talk: commenting, comparing, advising, judging, sharing its life, proving it knows best.

To soothe it, invite silence—not by harshly repressing, but offering an unfamiliar space: quiet.

Choose a moment when someone wants to share what they're going through. Focus fully on listening during the exchange.

Instructions:

  • Let them speak without interrupting.
  • Avoid steering to your experiences (no "me too").
  • Skip spontaneous advice or judgments (no "I'd do this in your shoes").
  • Of course, ask questions to invite more sharing.

Meanwhile, notice your reactions—urge to speak, opine, or share personally—without acting on them.

This offers the other true space to express, while building your listening, attention, and presence.

By embracing silence often, chit-chat fades. The "self" speaks only essentials.

Naturally, it's harder for some. If silence feels tough, that's proof introspection is needed.
