⭐ Exercise 2: Avoiding Concepts
The flow of our thoughts is a conditioned process that is very difficult to interrupt.
In practicing the Shamatha Path meditation, we saw that it is more effective to cut off thoughts as soon as they arise rather than trying to control them once they turn into reasonings.
But let's go even further by practicing this technique in our daily lives.
The exercise therefore consists of cutting off thoughts as soon as they appear outside of meditations.
Obviously, this is a real challenge because in everyday life, we are truly controlled by the mind: we think about work, children, money, what we did yesterday, what we have to do tomorrow... not to mention metaphysical questions!
At this stage, it is primarily about observing our behavior: Does our mind give us moments of respite, or are we totally prisoners of the incessant flow of our thoughts? Can we briefly cut off thoughts even before they are born? How many times is this possible during a day?
It is advisable to do this exercise serenely and playfully. For example, we can put on the costume of a thought hunter (a brain buster 😁) and shoot faster than our shadow at the thought that arises to prevent it from degenerating into reasoning.
It is possible to practice for a few days to see if we can sustain it over time.
I share my feelings in the Facebook group The Path to Awakening to help others.
