Slowing Down Mental Activity

When the flow of thoughts subsides, without any intention to observe or grasp anything, we come into direct contact with Awareness.
We begin to see that it is possible to exist, even temporarily, without thoughts, without emotions, and without identification with the “self.”
In that very moment, there is simply something empty, calm, and stable—nothing more is needed.
This is precisely where we must avoid a common mistake: trying to fill this space with something else.
On the contrary, we should continue to allow space, letting this inner emptiness reveal itself.
To support this, I invite you to explore a short meditation: the practice of Shamatha. I strongly encourage you to take a few moments to experience it for yourself.
One Step Toward Meditation
Meditation can be a source of anxiety, as each person projects their own concepts and assumptions onto the word.
The “self,” with its tendency to categorize and evaluate everything, unconsciously classifies all forms of meditation by assigning them labels (time-consuming, inaccessible, obscure, boring, culturally distant, and so on).
This is why it is essential to clarify what meditation truly is before going further in the practice.
In much of modern “New Age” spirituality, meditation is often seen as a tool for personal development.
By making use of moments of calm and reconnection, the practitioner seeks to soothe the mind, improve concentration, and regulate emotions.
For most people, meditation is oriented toward the well-being of the “self,” with the underlying aim of helping it adapt more effectively to worldly life (work, social life, entertainment, etc.).
In this program, meditation does not serve that purpose. Rather, it is used to cultivate mental tranquility, creating the optimal conditions for the realization of awakening.
